In the Mahābhārata account of the destruction of Dakṣayāga, Devī is not Dakṣa’s daughter but appears to be Pārvati. Having been cut off from any yajñabhāga, Devī, as if she was an ordinary wife on earth, lamentingly “taunts” Bhagavān about His being disrespected by Dakṣa.
“What dānas, niyamas, & tapas that I should do by means of which my husband, the pervasive Master, may be able to obtain a share in the Āhavanīya, so that this Bhagavān may obtain half or a third share?”
And then He says:
12-290-24 “You do not know me, Devī! One of thin belly & limbs, what words are to be used with Makheśa (Lord of Sacrifices; i.e. Himself, Hara) [,do you not know]? The original sounded very imperial to me!
I know, one of large eyes, that those not endowed with Dhyāna, who do not understand me, those unholy ones. It is by your power of delusion that the Devas along with Indra & the three worlds are all stupefied.++
[It is] ME that the Śam̐sitṛ-s praise in the Adhvara (sacrifice), [to ME] that the Sāmaga-s sing the Rathantara; [It is] ME that the Brahmanas, who know the Veda, worship/sacrifice to; [it is] MY shares [of the sacrificial offerings] the Adhvaryus prepare/make ready!
12-290-27 Devī said: Even every ordinary (mortal) man, in the presence of [his] womenfolk, praises & boasts himself; [there is] no doubt!
12-290-28 Śrī Bhagavān (Hara) said: I do not praise myself, Deveśī! See my [creation], slender-waisted one! [See] whom I create, beautiful one, for this Yāga!
Bhagavān/Śrīkaṇṭharudra & Devī respectively create Vīrabhadra & Bhadrakālī, who, along with numberless Rudras, destroy the Dakṣayāga. When the Devas & Dakṣa humbly enquire Vīrabhadra about Him, He tells the truth & asks Dakṣa to surrender, uttering these hair-raising words:
For refuge, go oh Viprendra (Lord of Vipras), to the God of Gods, the Lord of Umā! Better is the wrath of Rudra than the boons given by others (other Devas)!
When I read it for the first time, I was simultaneously roused & moved!
